Harrisonburg, Virginia

Parks + Recreation

In December 2022, Harrisonburg City Council approved utilizing $2.65 million in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds for the replacement of the Kids Castle play structure at Purcell Park. Monteverde Engineering and Design Studio assisted the City of Harrisonburg and the design team in delivering one of the city’s most beloved public park spces. The project focused on modernizing aging playground infrastructure, enhancing accessibility, and creating a safe, durable, and engaging environment for families. These designs are based on more than 1,000 suggestions and comments received from across Harrisonburg, including drawings submitted by local elementary and middle school students. The new playground will include a castle, two zip-lines,a tricycle track, multiple slides, play spaces for children ages 6 months to 2 years old, and much more. The project design team developed clear, functional design approach for circulation, access, and site amenities, ensuring compatibility with overall park operations. Monteverde led the project’s overall construction development. This was creatively achieved through the combination of identifying optimal conservation areas and through the use of available credits that the City had maintained from prior projects. Our site design team delivered quick turnaround, open communication, and attention to detail, strengthening the overall success of this community landmark.
