Luray Caverns Pedestrian Concourse

Luray Caverns, located in Luray, Virginia, is a world-renowned natural landmark and the largest cavern system in the eastern United States, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. As attendance increased over time, so did the expanse of parking required to support guests. Unfortunately, the incremental growth of these parking areas resulted in an unattractive and disjointed landscape that diminished the visitor experience and contributed to significant stormwater runoff issues. Recognizing the need for meaningful improvements, Luray Caverns leadership committed to enhancing the overall user experience—both indoors and outdoors. Monteverde was commissioned to create a phased master plan and site plan focused on transforming the grounds into a cohesive, park-like destination. The plan includes a complete reconfiguration of the existing parking areas, introducing more efficient layouts that reduce overall asphalt coverage and free up space for a dynamic network of pedestrian-oriented amenities. These improvements feature an outdoor theater, visitor plaza, pocket parks, water features, children’s play zones, vendor kiosks, enhanced wayfinding, and stormwater management strategies centered on user interaction and education.
